Hi
I would be grateful for any suggestions for a mum I am working with who has
given me permission to post to this group.
The mum has a breast implant on one side and breast reduction on the other. Her
baby is now 11 weeks old. She initially put him to the breast and although she
wasn't producing more than a partial supply things seemed to be working
according to plan. At 2 weeks postpartum she experienced severe pain in the
breast which had reduction surgery with some pain in the other breast as well.
The breast was very engorged further back but she was unable to express any
milk. Her doctor advised her to stop breastfeeding immediately and treated her
for the "worst case of mastitis he had ever seen". She followed this advice and
weaned her baby but was heartsore about it. After four weeks she decided to put
him to the breast once a day for the comfort of having him at the breast which
he was happy to go along with. Since then she has chosen to obtain a course of
Domperidone and take it to try and build a supply which seems to be working.
However she feels that her letdown is very slow and she is only able to
effectively drain the breast with manual expression and a fair amount of breast
massage and compression. I have observed the baby at the breast on the reduced
side and he nurses well for a few minutes but then begins to act frustrated. The
breast however seems to still have milk and hand expression produces a good
stream although the mum seems to use quite bit of pressure. Her sensation in the
nipples is definately reduced. The breast with an implant has a minimal supply.
Any thoughts would be welcome.
