YIKES..why is it LC families often meet up with so many challenges!
Ilene,
Ten months ago I was the live in LC for 11 days for my daughter in law and
son. Three things happened. Jaundice peaked at 16, mom developed mastitis
on d 7 and I learned something about myself...that I had absolutely no
objectivity. I know my kids appreciated and depended on my advice but I was an
internal wreck even though things were mostly going well and I was dealing
with the types of situations I see day after day at work. I don't think
David and Alison ever knew I was nervous. I worked very hard to present a
calm, encouraging demeanor. But--had things gone south I'm not sure I could
have been very effective. I found myself over reacting (internally again) all
the while I tip toed around what I would have just matter of factly
advised a couple I was working with. It does sound like you have some cause
for concern. I would find the best LC where your son and daughter in law
live and pay for a consult for them. Then you could be involved in supporting
the plan they agree on. The end of my story is that after 11 days I went
home and my sweet grand daughter went on to exclusively breastfeed for 6
months and is still happily nursing.
I do think there is a reason why physicians genrally will not treat their
own family members. For us LC's, as well, I think it can be fraught. We
have so much invested in having breastfeeding work, we're helpers and
nurturers by nature and then we throw in that unbelievable bond we have with our
children and objectivity goes out the window. I know at times I wished I
was just a clueless grandma who could provide emotional support and follow
the expert advice of someone else.
I wish all of you the best and know that I appreciate how you feel. It's
truly hard to be so close to the situation.
