Sick moms can be assisted to pump by their caregivers (ie: nurses, etc.)
Allowing the mother's breasts to become overfull can cause complications,
fever etc. We wouldn't let her bladder become over full would we? The
ICU/PP nurses may not like it, but it is their responsibility to see that
the mother is adequately assisted with emptying her breasts and preserving
her supply. Family can help when they are there, but it is ultimately a
nursing responsibility to see that it gets done and documented! Pat in SNJ
PS: it is the LCs responsibility to see that the family and staff know how
to use the pump and that it is cleaned properly and the milk stored
properly. It is not her responsibilty to do the pumping!
