Hello! I am an RN and lactation consultant intern (with Jaye Simpson
in Sacramento, CA) and we have been discussing alcohol consumption
and breastmilk. Using PubMed I have found quite a few studies on the
effects (long and short term) of breastfeeding and consuming alcohol,
but have found nothing on the amount of alcohol one has to consume
before it is detectable in breastmilk. The best study I have found
so far is one discussing the impact of drinking on lactation and the
infants mental development and the finding that most women are
drinking above their recommended national guidelines. To review this
study, see Breastfeed Rev. 2008 Mar;16(1):17-24 or search PubMed
using author Giglia RC and Binns CW.
My question is, has anyone come across any similar studies, or done
any research of their own? We are looking specifically at the amount
of alcohol it takes to actually become detectable in breastmilk and
the advice one should given to lactating moms. Any advice or help
would be appreciated! Thanks, Katie Williams, RN, BSN, LC Intern
Katie,
If you Google "Julie Mennella on Alcohol and Breast Milk" you will
find several studies by her on this topic. I think she does provide
measurements of how much alcohol was given and what the effects were
on milk supply and babies' interest in nursing.
