When families are at risk it often influences breastfeeding. If welfare
organizations donate formula, aided of course by the formula companies
because this gives them a leg in the door, then mothers are more tempted to
stop breastfeeding. I get appeals all the time from organizations that
provide soup kitchens and other distribution centres for the poor within
Israel and listed on the goods provided is one of the most aggressively
marketed brands of formula.
I have tried through these organizations and those sending aid to Gaza to
suggest that the mothers might benefit from a free hot-line for
breastfeeding problems or access to breastfeeding counsellors without
payment and nobody is interested.
The attitude in society today, in complete contrast to a century ago was
that in order to breastfeed, a mother has to have leisure and freedom from
pressure to do so and be educated enough to resist all the attempts to
market formula - and when the local health authorities are not doing their
best to control this unethical marketing - the bit about education might be
right.
