Thanks, Coach! Your explanation is SO helpful! After reading the posts in this thread, I see that we have been "compromised" by our language (or lack of) to describe this toooo common phenomenon. I think your explanation will "speak to" health care professionals better than the "confused" idea.

I have been telling moms that babies LOVE to breastfeed, IF they can figure it out. Also, they hate to feel hungry (most of them) so they will go for McDonald's (bottle) instead of trying to figure out how to eat at Soup-or-Salad (a buffet-style restaurant here). They (the moms!) usually smile and nod. I also remind moms that no one learns well when hungry or angry.
