Dear Lactnetters,
I spoke to a mom today that is having sore nipples with pumping. (permission to post) Baby is 2 weeks old, has some oral-motor issues & mom is double pumping every 2 hours for 15-20 min., 11 times a day. She yields about 70 ml each pumping & is providing all that baby needs (feeding EBM by bottle-she put baby to breast initially, but is not now.) She had similar issues (oral-motor & painful nipples) with first baby & pumped for 7 months. She used a 27 ml flange with first baby & is now using 30 ml flange. Still having nipple pain. (The scabs have come off. She has used gel pads for healing.) She uses medium suction to get letdown & then low suction when milk flows. She pumps for 7-10 min, milk stops flowing; takes a break for a few min, then resumes pumping; gets 1 more letdown & pumps 5 min. after milk stops flowing. (I suggested she NOT continue pumping after milk stops.) The end of her nipple is a very pale pink & looks dry after pumping.
Any thoughts, suggestions or comments? This poor mom isn't getting much sleep.
