A very helpful website for information on infants at work is http://www.babiesatwork.org/. Whether it is a WIC peer counselor or any other employed mother, infants at work is a valid option with many employers. This website is a treasure trove of information on this topic and even includes an insurance carrier who offers liability insurance. The Lester Kalmanson Agency has created a babies-at-work business liability insurance policy based on the best practices recommended by the Parenting in the Workplace Institute. The policy will cover babies up to 240 days of age or crawling, whichever comes first. I encourage mothers and clinicians to explore this option. Many mothers I have worked with have successfully brought their infants to work using information from this website along with a prescription for breastmilk from their pediatrician. While this may not be appropriate for all jobs, it may help offset the negative effect that return to work can have on breastfeeding if mothers are not carefully assisted in initiating and preserving milk production and getting breastfeeding off to a good start. What we really need is a national PAID maternity leave policy.
