I do not understand why a mom who likes to use "natural" treatments would use a drug like diflucan!! And nystatin is utterly ineffective. I recommend probiotics for any baby who has thrush, although I make sure the mom uses a probiotic not grown on dairy and appropriate for an infant. For example, Lactobacillus acidophilus alone is not appropriate--infants have bifobacterium infantis in their guts. Die-off of the yeast can cause the stools to change odor and consistency for a period of time. Mom needs to be taking a probiotoc too, especially as she is now doing more damage to her gut with the diflucan. Too bad she did not just stick with the natural treatment. For her nipples and the baby's bottom, I always use coconut oil.

Subject: Infant Thrush, mom giving probiotics...any ill side effects?
I have a mother who does not like using prescription meds and prefers natural
remedies/herbs. Currently, the infant has oral thrush and while the mom has
agreed to use Nystatin the dr prescribed, she is also giving the 5mo infant
probiotics (not sure the brand) via her finger and swiping the mouth with it
before and after nursing. She has contacted me asking if she can "overdose" the
infant on probiotics. The infant's bowels smell sweeter (even before starting
Nystatin), are more "liquidy" (less curds/formed), and seems to be developing a
diaper rash that was not there yesterday. Curious if this is the Probiotic or
maybe even possibly the dieing of the yeast causing these side
effects...although I wouldn't know why it would smell sweet previous to the
Nystatin?
The mom also just began Diflucan yesterday evening for yeast of the breast and I
know Diflucan can cause stomach upset in the mom. Still unsure of the sweet
smell?
Thanks for the help.
Trish
