I am not aware of any studies to show that cranberry pills work better than cranberry itself, but there are studies suggesting that there are components in cranberries that prevent E.coli from attaching itself to the lining of the bladder. So it may work a bit better than just drinking more, although this has not been proven by well done studies:

Cranberry is a food - so it is considered safe to take by breastfeeding mothers. I would prefer the cranberry itself, fresh or frozen - not juice from a box or supplements.
