While I have no comment on salt soaks I remember years ago when I was a new leader (a bit over 17 years ago) I received a box of info from my sponsoring leader and one was the list of sore nipple cures (before the idea of positioning having anything to do with painful nipples) and one was using ice cubes on the breast before latching the baby on.  The idea being to numb the nipples so the beginning of the feeding would hurt less until moms nipples 'toughen up'.  Which we now know really meant that until baby's mouth grew big enough to get a good latch by themselves!
