Our hospital adopted purposeful rounding about 2 years ago. On Med-Surg and Progressive Care units, it is hourly. If the patient is identified as a fall-risk, they get rounded every 30 minutes. I think the staff must walk miles circling the unit checking on people constantly! On our postpartum patients, we do purposeful rounding every 2-3 hrs. Two hours seems to have the right "feel" for nurses and patients. Moms are constantly being encouraged to "Call me if you need anything". We are an LDRP unit with usually only one support tech or student nurse on, so it is the direct caregiver RN checking on her patient. From what I recall when we started this practice, it was mostly to address pain/comfort. LC does her own rounds, checking in with each nursing mom at least once that day and offer assistance with latch, going over mom's questions, feeding plans, etc.
