I don't know how many times Liz and Karleen and Marsha are going to keep repeating themselves, so I'll give it a go.

The WHO code is NOT about pumps, it is not about moms needing to use bottles because they work or have a preterm baby that cannot be brought to the breast yet. It does not say that you can't use bottles or pumps, or tell your clients about those products.

The WHO code is about the MARKETING of bottles and nipples and how companies, such as Medela, market those items. There are other companies that manage to sell their products without violating the code. Medela has absolutely no good excuse for this, and neither do IBCLC's!!!

Liz and Marsha gave a fabulous presentation at the ILCA conference this past summer, and I think USLCA is (or just recently) having a webinar on the very same subject. I would encourage any and all of you to keep asking questions and learn about the WHO code, and then abide by it (and go have a look in the archives, there are reams of posts on the WHO code in there!) The WHO code is for the protection of the babies and the protection of that beautiful and wondrous, all-encompassing relationship we call breastfeeding. It is far too important to dismiss, it is not outdated, and it sure-as-heck does not need to be watered-down!
