Strep pyogenes, also known as group A beta-hemolytic strep, is a common
infection in nursing mothers. There is no reason to pump and dump when
mom is diagnosed. Moms should be treated with antibiotics for strep, and
the baby should be watched carefully for fever, listlessness, or a rash,
esp around genitals or perianal area, or other skin folds such as behind
ears, neck, thigh folds. Babies are most likely to develop strep in
these occluded areas rather than in the throat.
