Hi all -- I was talking with an acquaintance yesterday who is pregnant with baby #1. She mentioned that her OB told her that her blood calcium levels are low so she probably wouldn't make any breastmilk. She has a history of thyroid disease with levels that were all over the place in early pregnancy but are WNL now.
I am aware that hypothyriodism can cause low milk production and that hyperthyroidism can interfere with MER. I have also gleaned that low calcium levels can cause low milk supply but it seems like it can be addressed with a good quality calcium supplement. But, I haven't found anything that says low blood calcium in and of itself causes lactation failure. I would like to know more about this for my own knowledge base, so would appreciate any information.
(Mom is not my client, just a chatty acquaintance who knows I am an IBCLC, so I don't know any more about her hx)
Thank you,
