Hi,

Locally in the UK babies have to be buckled in an airplane strap of some kind. Older toddlers with their own seat have to be strapped in to it. Breastfed babies or toddlers may be very upset by this as they are used to being in their mums arms in the way they find comfortable. And we all know breast fed babies don't like waiting for their food! However as a safety issue it does seem sensible to abide by the airlines rules for the few minutes of take off and landing. Negotiations with the poor mum in question seem to have broken down far too quickly. Perhaps staff used the wrong language eg. 'you can't breastfeed' when what was actually true was 'your baby can't be in the sling for take off and we can't see how he/she could breastfeed when strapped in'. It is up to mum to decide if contortions are possible for breastfeeding during take off and landing. I feel so sorry for this poor mum, especially the other passengers reaction to her. I feel cross for her. She deserves compensation for her poor treatment by the airline. There are so many areas where people need educating on how to treat breastfeeding dyads.

Best wishes,

Sarah McCann.
