Teething does hurt. Inflammation makes it hurt more, and human milk has
anti-inflammatory compounds, so babies who are teething wake to bathe
their mouths in lactoferrin and other good things to make them feel better.
PIF is prolactin inhibiting factor. There are several. Dopamine inhibits
the secretion of prolactin. Progesterone during pregnancy (from the
placenta and the corpus luteum before that) blocks some of prolactin's
actions on the milk gland cells (the catalytic ones that lead to milk
production) while allowing the trophic functions (the ones that cause
milk gland cells to form, divide, and mature.
FIL is feedback inhibitor of lactation. It is made with the milk, and
when there is a lot of it, it attaches to a receptor on the milk making
cell and interferes with one particular stage of milk production
(protein movement and modification in the golgi apparatus).
