This is something that I have no practical experience in so I'm asking for honest answers and realistic expectations:
I was contacted by a mom who has a 5 month old and has decided she wants to try to breastfeed.
She had a 45-hour homebirth labor that ended in an emergency c-section of a 9 lb 15 oz baby boy (failure to progress). She attempted to breastfeed for a week per mom and was in a lot of pain both from feeding and the surgery and gave up breastfeeding.
At 5 months pp - what is the best protocol to use for inducing lactation? Would Newman Goldfarb be applicable and how should I tailor it since she already has the baby, etc? The midwife told her to start pumping and take fenugreek and blessed thistle, but I wouldn't expect the herbs to have any effect in a non-lactating state (am I wrong?). MW is reluctant to use Newman Goldfarb and I don't have a copy of her protocol in front of me at the moment. MW is suggesting the use of a nipple shield and SNS... We've decided that we need to be on the same page on helping this mom.
For those of you who have relactating experience - please offer your wisdom on this one!
