Dear Nikki,

I can see what kind of day you are having today... sad, huh, all those
practices...?!
I'm still reading Gabrielle Palmer's book... also something that doesn't
make you shout for joy...
Or our own breastfeeding association-board that has decided that strict
following of the WHO-code is not all that necessary...
ABM-promotion... okay... that stinks, but advertising from code violators as
long as their ad is about a product not under the scope...? No problem.
So, someone cleverly said: "What about Nutr...., sending in an ad that says:
BREASTFEEDING, THE BEST START or promotion for feeding tubes (not under the
scope, as we know)?"
That was considered a impossible option. Ads for pumps... that's okay,
because most moms need pumps and so they have to know about pumps (and
bottles, too).
All this caused a big discussion on the mailinglist, in which I, of course,
could not keep my mouth shut as a fervent promotor of integral compliance
with the code.
And now... now many are complaining: "The statement of the board is clear.
Let's close this subject. We should be able to buy bottles and pumps, so why
the fuss? I'm tired of this discussion. Noone needs to tell me what info I
need to read to make a decision. I can decide for myself what I think about
the WHO-code."
Many did not even know the code is about marketing, so how they could
possibly come to 'informed decision making' is a mystery to me... :-((
I'm the bad 'guy' now, though, because I say people need to know more; I'm
'carping' and 'nitpicking' and spoiling the atmosphere...
It makes me very sad. If breastfeeding (and lc!) organisations don't support
the code as fully as possible... who will?

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (who turned to writing poetry again
yesterday after a long break, to get away from the non-creative,
non-inspiring discussions...)
