Poison control is correct, breastfeeding need not be interrupted as the
neurotoxic nature of the venom will likely not be found in the mother's
milk, and if so, it would be in small enough quantity to not pose harm to
the infant.

We are loaded with scorpions in my area, and I have written an FAQ on this
for moms in our area. I can only speak of the ones we have, can you find out
the variety common to your area and I can check my file for you. According
to the University of Florida/IFAS offices on Environmental Horiculture, the
variety of scorpions found in Florida do not have a highly dangerous venom
like the ones in the desert southwestern U.S. Scorpion stings are a lot like
a wasp sting, with a transient localized reaction. The venom is usually
injected into the skin, not usually hitting blood vessels to circulate it to
other parts of the body.

Based on this, breastfeeding and the effect on breast milk should not be an
issue for concern. The reason I think so many moms become concerned, is that
the toxin tends to cause swelling in the glands under the arms( near the
breasts), neck, groin, and often results in a numb tongue and blue-ish lips.

Hope that helps you some,

I have a mom who was stung by a scorpion twice yesterday. Baby is 4 month= s
old. Mom has noticed baby is not swallowing and is not satisfied at the
breast since the stings. Mom took no medications and was told by poison
control to continue breastfeeding.

Anyone with information on the link between the scorpion stings and lower=
ed supply?

Kindly reply to me off-list.
