Laurie, Cathy-and all you wise women

I struggle with this all the time. Along the same lines, if a IBCLC recommends a mother uses a pump, or another device and that same IBCLC sells these devices or rents pumps, is THAT a conflict of interest? Or is it just providing something that you know the mother really needs for now and saving her the hassle or running all over trying to find it?

I don't rent pumps in my private practice but the WIC office where I work(ed) does. I was much more comfortable recommending these things when I had them available and didn't have to charge a mom for them. BUT, it is often really inconvenient for the mother to get these supplies and she might not use something that might really help her because she just doesn't have the energy to go get it.

This has been a dilemma for me for as long as I have been IBCLC. What do you all think?

Subject: probiotics

Cathy Genna said, "Probiotics, prebiotics and functional foods are
becoming big business, so there is going to be increased pressure on
moms to use these for their babies."
And I agree with Cathy. It would be useful to know if a practitioner
suggesting their
use also sells them. That would seem to be a conflict of interest.
