"does the extended use of formula milk have any potential benefit/harmful
effects as compared to use of fresh cow's milk? Will using formula milk
beyond age one affect health the same way it affects health when used from 0
to 1 year of age?"
Hi Linda
I don't think we know. There is one big study demonstrating that up to 9
months of age, kids who have formula as their main milk are more likely (in
the order of twice as likely) to be hospitalised for GI infection or LRTI.
I think the big risk is to the family's budget ... and perhaps the child's
appetite (who needs to eat real food when you're filled up with formula?).
If mum wants to keep going with the formula, then there isn't any evidence
suggesting this will be harmful ... you might want to think about how many
calories he is getting from that energy-fortified (sweetened) formula and
the risk of obesity.
