Jan,
I had a woman with the same situation. I have worked with her now thru two
babies with this problem. She just found it easier to pump and bottle feed
As the process of down-regulating her supply didn't work well without giving
her breast infections.
What worked for her was:
1) Lecithin 2, 3xday
2) Sage tea (mixed with peppermint tea for taste)
3) Pumping when breasts were "requesting it" and only until streams
stopped.
4) Wear sports bra
5) Ice breasts/motrin as needed for comfort
So, without the lecithin, she would get mastitis. And, she was not able to
decrease the times per day of pumping or the minutes of pumping until she
drank 3 cups of tea per day.
(she would get about 10 oz every time she pumped)
She was able to get down to 2 (11 oz) pumpings with no ill effects but
couldn't get down further until the oral contraceptives were started. (one
with estrogen in it) Then with the continued sage and sports bra (and ice
as needed) she was able to dry up. (always using her breasts as her guide,
versus the clock).
Hope this helps!
