Hi Evi,
Yes, I realise that UNICEF in developed countries mainly does fundraising
(rather than on the ground stuff- though this is not the case everywhere eg
UK) however, their name is a very useful one. Many people respect it and
it's a relatively small matter for them to put out a press release for WBW.
It's dead easy to go to the media section of any country's UNICEF website,
go to the media section and find the contact details for the media people.
All you need to say is "Did you realise that next week is World
Breastfeeding Week and the theme is on breastfeeding in emergencies. UNICEF
is usually the lead agency for infant feeding in emergencies. Are you going
to be putting out a press release?" Since much of the aid that does harm
and kills babies comes from developed countries it would be oh so useful for
local UNICEF's to put out a press release stating the importance of
breastfeeding and the dangers of infant formula donations in emergencies.
So, no takers on calling UNICEF in their country?? Not a single Lactnetter
willing to take 5 minutes??? C'mon it's easy? Who's up for it?

The UNICEF offices in developed countries are basically NGOs of the host
country and the main mandate is fundraising for UNICEF.
UNICEF in and of itself is a fund tied to the UN and not actually a part of
the structure such as the WHO, etc. It is considered an equal partner in
many things today but this is not how it is structurally.
It is a business . The mother ship is the one that puts out the policies and
programs for the parts of the world that receive help. The National
Committes (Nat Comm) raise one third of the total budget the rest comes from
contributions from governments, etc.
Bottom line, it is your local UNICEF NatComm's job if they want it to be its
job.
