We have a rather large Hispanic population that delivers at my hospital on
WIC. Many of these moms will pour formula in the child's mouth shortly
after birth, then again once they are in a room; and like clockwork, they
will pour more and more in. When you visit them in the room, they jiggle
their breasts and say NO LECHE. Some end up dripping on their
nightgowns--others are so engorged on discharge day, but there is still a
bottle in their hand when I enter the room (talk about denial). Some are
trying to get as many freebies as they can get. Others are pure knowledge
deficit and listening to friends and relatives. I know that trying to deal
with this issue in the hospital is way too late. I am hoping to see what
can be done educationally in the community. If you have programs that you
feel have statistically made a difference, I would love to hear about it.
