Hello all you all knowledgeable people!
I have been contacted by a mother who is breastfeeding her one year old
son.
He has just been diagnosed with diabetes and the mother has been advised
to stop breast-feeding. They find he has high levels of blood glucose
during the night and they said it was due to the breast milk ( "it is
like sugar- water " they told the mother). Now she has not breast fed
for some nights and he still has high blood sugar levels during the
night. I do understand that there will be some time before they all get
to know what levels of insuline will be the best for the boy, but I do
not understand why she must stop breastfeeding totally. Of course she
will have to breastfeed in a more regulated way than before, but it is
still important for her to breastfeed.
She should be able to breastfeed after an ordinary meal - as a
"dessert" - and instead of having cow's milk to drink with the food (a
common practice in Sweden) I have worked with women with diabetes and
their newborns, but have not come across a breastfed child with diabetes
before. Who has knowledge about breastfeeding a child with diabetes,
and where can I learn more? Happy for all the input I can get!
Happy Easter and best wishes
