Yes, I agree that the pumping  and cup feeding isn't really necessary  in
all likelihood but the doctors in the practice become concerned at a 7% loss
and recommend supplementation then, most often with formula. 

 I felt really pleased that this mom was willing to try pumped milk
supplementation for a short time, just until we see baby's wt. going back
up.  The weight loss was 10% on day 2.

 I expect to see the wt. turned around on Tuesday.
