I have taught parents for several years now how to pace feed, and have used
the terms "external and internal" pacing. We begin the feeding by the
caregiver/parent "externally" pacing the feeding, following the baby's cues. As
the baby picks up on the method, he often begins to "internally" pace the
feeding, stopping to breathe every 3-5 swallows. It reinforces to the parents how
smart their baby is, how relaxed he can be during a bottle-feeding, and how
to truly follow his cues during the feeding.
