I can't remember where I read this (maybe Catherine Watson Genna's
book?) but sometimes, this tendency to clamp down while nursing is
related to another issue, one of muscle hypertonia. I also remember
reading (perhaps in the same place? I wish I could find it now but
maybe someone else has it?) that it is a normal response for babies to
bite down when something touches their lower gum, so perhaps the
tongue position on this baby isn't ideal but somehow he's done well
enough to gain and breastfeed "successfully" (though my heart goes out
to this woman who is probably in a lot of pain!).
I hope this helps,
