Dear Betty,
Re: your comment below. I am beginning to hear the same thing where I
work. It's funny how these ideas migrate....ok, maybe "funny," is the
wrong word. But I also had a neo tell a mom that he doesn't believe in
nipple confusion; he stated, "babies are born to suck...they'll suck on
a rock if you let them." How clearly inexperienced he is at watching
newborns feed. The next time I have a little near term baby w/ a mom w/
large flat nipples & edematous areola, and engorgement; and the baby has
had a few bottles...I think I'll give him a call so he can show me how
the baby can suck "on a rock."
Don't throw in the towel. In response to inexperienced/uneducated
comments, simply state your experience to the patient/physician. I'd say
something like "I've been working with breastfeeding moms and babies for
over 22 years. I've seen thousands of babies breastfeed, and here is
what I've noted....."
Hang in there.
<I was asked by a NEO what exactly is that I tell moms, because
according to this Dr there is no such thing as = nipple=20
confusion..all babies take BOTH w/out a problem!>
