I've received the following three responses to my "Plugged Ducts, Fire Boob,
and a Bump" post from June 23rd. (Issue 2009-627). Thank you for your
responses thus far! I thought I'd check and see if you had any
more thoughts or ideas to add before I forwarded this information on to
her. Thanks!

Were all of the bouts of mastitis on the right side as well? Perhaps she
could let the right side shut down and just nurse on the left. And maybe if
she always has problems on the right side she should have that right breast
evaluated by a breast specialist.

Perhaps a castor oil pack would help her clear the plug. I just recommended
this for someone last month, who was adamant that she wanted to avoid
antibiotics if possible for her mastitis and it worked to clear up her
breast (I think :) or else the breast may have just cleared up on its
own!!!) It clearly didn't hurt...

I would bet on oversupply. Is baby gaining very fast? Lets milk roll out
sides of mouth while nursing? Did baby used to often choke and cough at
breast? They often learn to pinch to slow flow, causing "burning" vasospasm
pain after feedings.

Not sure about the bump. I have seen women with such soft bumps near the
areola. I have assumed they were dilated ducts near the surface. Stick out
when full, gone when not.

Sounds like she has a plugged nipple pore that causes backups in the
associated ducts. Could be a skin tag - have someone look at it closely with
a light and magnifying glass.
