Local mothers are not happy that they are told to leave the pool and pool
area to breastfeed their babies. Pool manager and later Calgary recreation
manager cited RWI (recreational water illnesses) as the reason but quickly
backpedaled to assure mothers that they wouldn't be asked to leave the pool
or pool area but instead be counseled as to the dangers of recreational
water. Not surprisingly mothers responded that breastfed babies were being
singled out because mothers of babies not being breastfed were never given
such "information". Officials claimed the rationale for their actions were
RWI, and indeed included links to various CDC guidelines in their flurry of
emails. However prohibiting breastfeeding is not in the CDC guidelines and
various other measures (such as asking pool users to wash their bottoms with
soap and water or to exclude pool users who have had diarrhea within the
past two weeks) are not being implemented. Obviously if they were truly
interested in RWI those basic measures would have been implemented long
before inventing their own. Mothers here are insisting that should another
patron mistakenly object to a breastfeeding baby that pool staff speak not
to the mother but rather to the other patron and educate them as to the
baby's right to feed. Frankly "I" am hoping the start asking all customers
to wash their bottoms with soap and water and make the pool water safer for
everyone!
