Hi Sharon,
Congratulations! Re your client with severe back pain. A couple things I
would consider. First, why was her pain managed with massage and chiro
during pg but not anymore? I think she should explore what might be
different (carrying the baby? positioning? stress? different sleep
arrangements?) that could be causing her pain to come back. Next, my
understanding would be that any narcotic type drug could make the baby
sleepy and of course affect mother's ability to care for the baby. There are
several NSAIDS but perhaps mother could explore non-systemic or non-drug
therapies like nerve blocks, electrical stimulating units, pain patches? All
of which I am not knowlegeable about but there are sub-specialties in
medicine in which the doctor specializes in pain control/pain relief.
Hope she feels better soon,
