Liz you crack me up! I'm gonna have to use that analogy.hehehe!
Over here in grand old Sacramento the 'thing' to freak the moms out with the
past few months is exactly this subject. ALL (and I seriously mean every
single mother I have seen in the past 4 months and that's a bunch!) are
concerned about the foremilk hindmilk "issue". It seems it is the 'issue'
of the year in our hospitals as the nurses are being very vigilant about
telling moms to make sure the baby gets all that hindmilk because we don't
want a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Ugh.
I tell them it's all one milk - there's a little hindmilk in the foremilk
and a little foremilk in the hind milk and it is a NON-ISSUE unless: mom
has one baby and enough milk to feed triplets and baby is nursing on each
breast for 5 minutes and is stuffed. We go over ALL the basics - finish the
first breast first - watch the baby for signs of satiety, use the 2nd for
desert.etc. Basic stuff here.
Then they want to know how long it will take the baby to finish the first
breast because they were told 5 minutes or 10 minutes or 20
minutes.whatever. I had one mom who did have enough milk to feed triplets
working for over an hour and a half to get her baby to nurse for 20 min on
each side. This poor kid was STUFFED - he took 6 ounces in 5 minutes and
was OUT for 3-4 hours. We worked her supply down (then her Dr crashed it by
giving her a combo birth-control pill telling her there was only a 10%
chance it would drop her supply.but that is another brick wall I must piece
back together) and they are doing fine now (her supply rebounded nicely in a
few days). And it's back to the basics of "WATCH THE BABY" and teaching
them how to know when baby is done, when to encourage more feeding and when
not - as each baby is very different.
I think when moms are talking with me they get that these so called issues
really aren't when they see (and hear) my exasperation, my sigh, shaking my
head (I make really funny very expressive faces and they start laughing with
understanding) - and I tell them about my proverbial brink wall being broken
by my banging my head against it because of all the stuff they get told to
worry about that they really don't need to worry about. :-) I get them
laughing and they are GLAD to not have to worry about it anymore. :-)
I think it is interesting how we have a 'run on.' this and that, t-t,
foremilk/hindmilk, reflux, allergy, etc.
Basics are good - basics are always there to be taught - they are simple and
interactive. Makes sense to me. :-)
Warmly,
Jaye
