I'm a new IBCLC and have worked professionally in the field only 2.5 years, but this weekend once again had moms in my care in the hospital with unusual nipple types, and have repeatedly seen those types in their ethnic groups. I realize this could be totally coincidental, but just curious if anyone has noticed this or if there any studies to support.
A number of mothers from India have had severely inverted nipples, and a number from Mexico have had nipples that bifurcate, almost looking like a fish-tail. They make milk just fine, but the unusual presentation over and over has made me wonder. I know this is anecdotal, but I thought Lactnet would be the best place to throw out this question. Thanks!
