You go Dr Jay!!! Only a doc can smack another doc with such articulate
passion ... and not be dismissed as an undereducated, hysterical ...
patient!
I have seen what formula (and bottle) advertising can do to infants ... it
is heartbreaking ... I particularly enjoyed hearing you enjoin those who
would position themselves as global leaders in paediatric medicine to live
up to their self-imposed mandate.
Cheers

Subject: Nancy . . . Babies die when we wimp out
Nancy, you can't be serious. I also know Dr. Tayloe personally and
he's probably a nice person. But his response should have stated very
clearly that positive articles about formula/negative about
breastfeeding will lead to illness in millions of children. And the
wimpy response of the AAP combined with the irresponsible article in
the Atlantic sets an example for the rest of the world which
perpetuates formula marketing with impunity.
Millions of babies die.
Speak up, Dr. Tayloe! Nancy, your endorsing his weak response is
completely out of character for you and completely unacceptable.
The 2005 AAP statement may have been unequivocal. Dr. T's 2009
response made it sound like we pediatricians should help moms "choose"
between the two relatively equal ways to feed babies: breast milk or
formula. Read his statement again, Lactmet friends. Please read it and
respond with outrage. Respond directly to the AAP.
And we spend hours writing about a fine company like Medela . . .
Yes, yes I know they shouldn't have created those ads but they've been
allies of breastfeeding for decades AND, I know, sadly they promote
breast milk feeding too much. Let's help them.
I won't give up on Dr. Tayloe and his posse either, but the AAP just
HAS to stop accepting millions of dollars from the pharmaceutical/
formula industry.
They must immediately stop asking for and sucking on that awful
unhealthy unethical CA$H teat to pay for our doughtnuts and coffee and
mousepads and dinners and meetings and building construction (look it
up!) Until they stop accepting all this graft, their credibility and
promotion of breastfeeding and truly optimal health care for out
beloved vulnerable babies will rarely rise above quiet lip service and
equivocal responses when nursing infants and mothers are threatened.
