Hardly a week passes without a request to "recommend", market, distribute,
advertise a multitude of products which have some connection to pregnancy or
lactation. These requests are sometimes in the disguise of offers to
include my name on the product`s website, give me a commission for selling
in quantity, or more attracitvely, offering discounts to my clients.
I flatly refuse and ask the products` representatives not to bother me
again.
I know that the National Childbirth Trust in the UK have always encouraged
their counsellors to be registered agents for breast pumps and nursing bras
and in fact they function successfully as a charitable trust from the income
from their on-line store, but this is done through HQ so it is the
organization and not the individual counsellor who is responsible for
quality control.
If a client needs to hire a breast pump or a TENS machine, these are
available just on payment of a deposit to a chain of a charity that was set
up in Israel to provide essential medical equipment for short-term use. Some
of the health insurance funds also provide them at subsidized rates. If a
client wants to purchase these items or other products such as oils, nipple
creams, we have enough pharmacies, nursery equipment stores and shops
selling natural products for them to make a choice.
The only consumer statement I make in my work - and I tell my clients why -
is that I never serve Nestle coffee!
