Hi Ethel,
I am a new IBCLC, in private practice for 7 months. Up until this month, I
have seen 2-3 mother/baby dyads per month. This month I will have provided
5 consults by the end of the month, 2 by referral from previous clients. I was
feeling very frustrated with the slow pace of my practice and noted this on
another online list devoted to IBCLC's in private practice. The wise women
there said it typically takes anywhere from 3 to 8 years to fully establish a
private practice in this field. While I have the luxury of going slowly (husband
with a good job) it was a shock to realize it might take a very long time to
reach my goals. Although it seems to vary by region, where I live, the
hospitals require IBCLC's to also be nurses and only 2 peds practices in the
whole metro area have (RN) LC's on staff.
I don't want to be discouraging, because I love what I'm doing, but my work is
definitely not going to contribute significantly to my family bank account for
quite a while, especially when I factor in my first year business expenses.
Best wishes,
Brenda Carroll, MA, IBCLC, LLLL
