IBCLCs need to read the letter in ILCA's website dated March 16, 2009. On
page 7 there is a question regarding selling Medela products. The letter
instructs the IBCLC not to display Medela products. They can be stocked
but "available for sale on request". Otherwise the IBCLC becomes complicit by
association. I am part of the "chain" that perpetuates the marketing of this
CODE violator’s products when I show the PIS to breastfeeding moms
returning to work.
Medela has been deemed the evil CODE violator. The Medela ad in American
Baby says 100% Breastmilk. Look at the second page of Medela
advertisement shown in the ILCA letter; "The complete system for collecting
and feeding breastmilk". The ad states repeatedly, this system is for
BREASTMILK!
So, clearly the CODE intends for those who abide by the CODE to disassociate
themselves from bottles and artificial nipples since these are devices of
formula feeding. Breastmilk from the Breast, period! Woman should be home
breastfeeding their babies. Then they wouldn’t need to look for a safe
breastmilk storage system.
What I teach my Marines and Naval personnel in the Working Moms Pumping
class keeps them providing breastmilk for their babies. The class has included
showing the Medela and the Ameda pumps. They are taught to introduce
bottle feeding but not before three weeks of life. The day care centers are
not going to do alternative methods of feeding. The Injoy video I show
features the Medela PIS, guess that useful tool needs to go too since it
suggest using a CODE violator’s pump. Pity because it also shows modern
woman combining work and breastfeeding.
The US Constitution has been amended. Maybe the CODE needs to move into
the 21st Century.
