. In fact, there is one question asked by nine =
of
ten new parents coming back to our clinic: S/he isn't burping, what shoul=
d
we do? Can we move the sleeping, satiated breastfed baby from mother's ar=
ms
to some other surface before it has burped? I tell them burping is not
mandated by law and not all new babies do it. Never seen a baby get
readmitted for aspiration pneumonia for lack of burping nor any other
reason, to this day.

We are mammals. When was the last time you saw a mother cat whapping her
kittens on the back? Or a cow, or horse, or bear, or dog, or...or...or???
Why this all consuming issue with burping which is a holdover from bottle
feeding!!!
Although, if a mom has a fast and furious MER, and baby GULPS at the
breast, then he may want/need to burp -- but do WE have to be the ones to
facilitate it? If there is air in his tummy, it will come up -- with or without
our ministrations.
Baby falls asleep at the breast after a nice feed, and then mom feels as
though she has to toss him over her shoulder, pat his back, and -- voila --
he's awake AGAIN and wants to nurse back to sleep -- whereupon mom decides
(a) "I don't have enough milk", or (b) He's using me as a pacifier or (c)
formula is the answer....
Sigh.
