This could be a description of me, 14 years ago after my first son was born,
except that I was anemic. I still have a mis-shapen nipple from the way it
healed. I found, in addition to general cleaning, that ensuring any crusty bits
were removed--they softened during a feeding, or using a warm wet cloth,
and could be pulled/scraped off gently--then expressing a few drops of milk
helped greatly. That, plus the tincture of time, and ensuring a good latch at
EVERY feeding, eventually allowed them to heal. He went on to nurse for 14
months (self-weaned), pain-free after that rocky start.
Feel free to share my story, if you think it would help the mother.
