Dear all:
The transgender male who carried his wife's baby for her has a legal benefit that is not
available to many other women who are in a relationship with a woman. By becoming a
male through surgery, he is legally a parent to the infant that he carried and delivered even
though he is not a genetic parent. For a woman in similar circumstances who does not
undergo surgery to become a male, the law has quite different ramifications. In order to
become a parent, she must adopt the child she delivered if she is not the genetic parent.
However, it is now illegal for her to adopt in many states.
These are the ethical challenges of the modern age.
Furthermore, in some countries, polygamy is still legal and sanctioned by religion.
Best, Susan Burger
