Jan says Gabrielle Palmer's 1993 The Politics of Breastfeeding has "If a multinational company developed a product....." on page 19. I looked *around* page 19 of her 1988 edition and didn't fiind it.
However, if you google "imagine that the world had invented a new dream product", you get 128 hits, most of which seem to refer to UNICEF 1991.
So I'm *guessing* that James Grant did indeed write the first version - the reference to the world makes it sound like him - that Gabrielle modified it and thus (especially since it was UNICEF and almost certainly not copyrighted) didn't feel a need to attribute it, and that it's undergone numerous adaptations since then. At least I like to think that James Grant said it first :-)
In the process, I found an old Physician's Pledge of his, nicely updated in the early 2000s. Google "recognizing that breastfeeding plays a uniquely" and you'll get a well-formatted version.
