 Hi,

Never heard of this and would definitely recommend flash heating (72 C for 15 seconds) which is what the HIV positive Mothers are doing very successfully at a hospital in Durban, South Africa.

They pour not more than 120 ml of expressed breastmilk into a glass jar. Place the jar(uncovered) in a pot of water. The level of the water is two fingers above the level of the milk. The pot is placed on a heat source and when the water comes to a rolling boil, the jar with the milk is removed from the pot. The milk is cooled and ready to feed to the baby.

Flash heating is easier and more protective of properties than Pretoria Pasteurisation and it completely inactivates cell free HIV in naturally infected samples from women in Durban.

Israel-Ballard K. et al, revised manuscript submitted, JAIDS Oct 2006

 Results from study below:

Impact on anti-microbial properties?

. US Study

- Both Flash-heat and Pretoria Pasteurization eliminated spiked bacteria

- Results similar if heat treatment applied before or after 12 hours of storage

- Flash-heated samples inhibited more bacterial growth than Pretoria Pasteurization

. South Africa study

- 38 samples, control and post heat, incubated up to 8 hours at room temperature

- Flash-heat destroyed existing bacteria and no contamination was seen at 8 hours in most samples

Israel-Ballard K. et al, JAIDS Oct 2005; and J TropPediatr 2006

What happens to vitamins and immunological properties?

. US Study using HIV spiked samples

- Neither heating method substantially changed milk concentration of vitamin A, ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, pyrodixine, B12, or folate.

- Lactoferrin and lysozyme were somewhat reduced, but still present in reasonable amounts

- Flash heating seemed slightly more protective of nutrients than Pretoria pasteurisation
