Forgive me if this has been mentioned already on Lactnet:

"The Relationship Between Infant-Feeding Outcomes and Postpartum
Depression: A Qualitative Systematic Review" is a thorough look at
the literature - I am still reading the whole thing.
It appears that depression in mothers tends to lead to early
cessation of bf - I am not surprised. This is what I observe, and I
also observe that when mothers seek medical advice for depression, if
they are offered pharmaceutical treatment they are *very often* told
they cannot breastfeed.
I do think there are psychological and emotional impetuses in the
decision to cease bf as well, and possibly social ones, too.
