English major that I was, I always imagined that Australian hold was a
whimsical way to remember that the mom is "down under" in this position.
As with so many of the issues surround birth and lactation, this is a
term that definitely needs an update with a new name.
I have to share an exciting experience. Today was Postpartum Day in my
Childbearing Family class here in nursing school... and we were scheduled
to watch the Ross video on breastfeeding AARGH! I had suggested we watch
some other video, so we were able to switch to the Royal College of
Midwives video which I was able to borrow from Susan Johnson, VLCA pres.
I also brought in an array of breastpumps on the off chance that I could
just put them out for people to see and handle...and brought a breast
model and a Medela balloon.
Well, I wish I'd brought a doll, because the professor told me I could
have a half hour to talk about breastfeeding in addition to showing the
video! (and looking at the pumps.)
So there is a God in heaven, and She is smiling this afternoon. And 20
nurses-to-be know more than they did this morning about feeding, signals,
positioning, latch, satiety...Wahoo :-))
