Wanted all in the USA to be aware of a front-page article of ACOG's most
recent edition of OB.Gyn.News re: "Begin Postpartum Contraception Early"?
(Complete text of article is available at
http://www.obgynnews.com/article/PIIS0029743709701375/fulltext.) The article
reports on findings from a Feb 17-19, 2009 expert panel meeting. It appears
the new guidelines supports the use of oral and more invasive or
irretrievable forms of progestin-only contraceptives during lactation. I'm
aware of the research lit re: supporting use of low-dose progestin-only
options but, as per many, I've dealt with a number of BF women who were
weeks to many months postpartum and can date an abrupt drop in milk
production to within a week or two of starting a progestin-only
contraceptive method. (In a couple of instances, there were other possible
contributing factors, e.g. transient maternal illness, but usually nothing
usually associated with an abrupt, really significant decrease or a
long-lasting decrease when extra BF or pumping was implemented.) I wanted
all to be aware and, if anyone knows of an agency monitoring response of
lactation to contraceptives, please share... Thanks.
