We haven't ever kept data on how many babies do this, but it is our
impression that it is more common here than it was a few years ago. The
thing that has changed here is the use of IV fentanyl in labor. We don't
have a high rate of epidurals, but almost half the women who give birth in
my unit are given IV fentanyl, and the fifteen percent who have epidurals,
are given it in the epidural mix as well. We need to do systematic
record-keeping to see whether there is any correlation or this will remain
an anecdotal myth - for now I will just ask June whether there has been any
change in the analgesia on offer to women in labor in her unit?
