Mum says she is desperate. "I'm so upset by it all, its all just too much!"
Baby is aged about 4 mths now and weight is terrific.
Baby was born without an anus and had emergency surgery to form a
colostomy. Next operation was to form an anus and in 2 weeks will have the
colostomy closed. Mum has had her baby in to the city doctors 2 to 3 times
per week for followup and has managed to maintain supply [thanks to
Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle] despite her fatigue and low iron stores. WE
have had numerous discussions re feeding, supply and the parents are
stressed by the 'colic' / screaming. The surgeon has said that baby cannot
have milk feeds from the evening before surgery which is for 1100 am ie about
13 or 14 hours. Mother says that baby has gone back to 3 hrly feeds since the
last surgery weeks ago, and friends have said that she should give him water
to get him out of the frequent breastfeeding and to help wth the 'colic'.
Not wanting to go against the surgeon of course.I suggested that he may
need to go in the night before and at least have an IV for hyrdation. Also
suggested that mum should ask the surgeon for a plan of sorts. Can anyone
provide comments of or advice as to how mum can deal with baby missing out
missing out on about 5 feeds before the next surgery. Thank you. Cath.
