The problem here, is seeing it as a one or the other thing. Either
formula, or pumping.
When there is an entire spectrum of alternatives, that gets little to no
attention, particularly in the USA. Paid maternity leave for one.
I live in a world where pumping is neither predominant, nor expected.
When we look into the situation, from outside, it's perplexing to see
the status quo being upheld so vigorously, as opposed to being.. opposed.
The wholesale corporate replacement of formula bottle feeding, with EBM
bottle feeding... is just horrific. As is the corporate creeping of
that message, to everywhere else, in search of profits.
_Especially_ when pumping, particularly exclusive pumping, is such a
hard path. Mothers who pump regularly work so hard at something, and it
costs them so much money as well, and it's so stressful. It just
beggars my belief, that some pregnant women _plan_ on exclusive pumping,
as it's 'easier'. And they think that because... answers on a postcard
please.
I'm very very happy that every pumping Mum I know, is pumping to keep
her baby off formula, at great personal cost. I applaud each and every
one. I'm horrified anyone of them are having to pump at all!
And I consider it important that people continually say "It's
regrettable that pumping culture has to exist at all, how can we change
that?" rather than solely concentrate on how well each mum is doing on
not feeding formula.
They dynamic that Mums are faced with returning to work days after
birth, and weeks if they are lucky.. is not fixed in stone. *That* can
be addressed! Bring in maternity rights, throw out the pumps!

broadening out the argument.)
